he International Air Transport Association (IATA)
is the trade association for the world’s airlines,
representing over 290 airlines in 120 countries and
83% of total air traffic. IATA supports many areas
of aviation activity and helps formulate industry
policy on critical aviation issues. IATA’s mission is
to represent, lead, and serve the airline industry
by working together to shape the future growth
of a safe, secure and sustainable air transport
industry that connects and enriches our world.
IATA member airlines transport over 56
million metric tons of goods a year by air
cargo, representing more than 35% of global
trade by value but less than 1% of world trade
by volume. That is equivalent to $6.8 trillion
worth of goods annually, or $18.6 billion worth of
goods every day.
Aviation is so much a part of our daily life that
it is difficult to believe that the first commercial
airline flight took place in 1914, a little more than
a century ago. In 1944, the world’s governments
came together at the Chicago Conference to create
a foundation for the then budding global aviation
industry. Following the war people understood
the key role aviation would play in connecting
the world. IATA was founded the following year,
in 1945, by 27 visionary airlines, with a focus
on working with the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) to develop international
standards for aviation. The Chicago Convention
